The Enterprise is sent to pick up two members of a research team on Menarian 2, a planet orbiting a star that is about to go supernova. But when Captain Kirk, Lieutenant Commander Spock and Doctor McCoy beam down to the surface of the planet they discover that the station has been abandoned for three months. Meanwhile, Chief Engineer Scott is forced to take the Enterprise out of orbit after detecting a massive solar flare, leaving the landing party stranded on Menarian 2 until the flare passes. Kirk and the others play back the research team's video records, watching as Linke and Ozaba hear a high-pitched whine, and then vanish. Kirk, Spock and McCoy then experience the same noise, and suddenly find themselves transported to a dark underground chamber. Here they encounter a timid, mute, woman whom McCoy names ' Gem'. Two aliens appear, and identify themselves as Vians; they then take Kirk away and torture him as part of a test. However, the real subject of their experiment is Gem, who is an empath; she is able to cure Kirk by taking on his wounds, and then healing herself. As the Vians' tests increase in brutality, each of the Starfleet officers is tortured in turn; but when McCoy is brought back on the brink of death, it seems that even Gem cannot save him...
